Music has been essentially a part of man’s historical development both as unique individuals and as a social group. There is not a single soul on earth who does not like music. Maybe not really like it but at least show some appreciation for it. And while scientists and behaviourists are struggling to establish the link between music and what it can do to the human body in a physiologic sense, sociologists and musicians on the other hand are more interested in the power of music to establish patterns of social conformity.
Be it social, emotional, mental, or physical, music can really exert so much influence on the lives of man. This is why many therapists are including music as one of the essential elements in their repertoire of therapeutic regimens. Hospitals and other healthcare institutions are encouraging their patients to include music therapy in their regimen to help soothe whatever ailments they may be experiencing. While the direct causal relationship is quite difficult to prove, the overall effects of music is nonetheless equally profound not to exalt as a possible alternative to mainstream therapeutic regimens. While scientists continue to figure out just how acoustic signals can effect changes in the body’s internal balance, behaviour and cognitive experts believe that the best way to reap the full benefits of music is by starting early.
And this is why parents are strongly encouraged to get their kids into music as early as they can. Studies have shown that music introduced early in life can significantly lead to individuals who are more emotionally balanced, mentally stable, and socially attuned with their environments. This is why music studios are already including kiddie lessons in their programs. A look at the Red Drum Music website as well as the websites of other music studios will reveal that their clientele knows no age.
Why should music playing started early?
Studies have shown that foetuses who were subjected to music while they were still in their respective mother’s wombs tended to develop into more emotionally caring, more social, and more mentally stable individuals compared to those who were not exposed to any form of music. Whether it is a piece from Beethoven’s classics or even those from Tchaikovsky, Bach, and Mozart, or from Metallica and the Sex Pistols, music introduced during pregnancy have shown to produce better children and individuals. Scientists still cannot determine the exact mechanism how music can effect such changes though.
Some argue that music synchronizes the innate rhythms of the body. For example, many believe that the rhythmic contractions of the heart can be closely simulated by the rhythmic patterns produced by percussion instruments such as pianos, drums, lyres, xylophones, and others. Nerve impulses are also believed to be generated in sequences or rhythmic patterns. Wind instruments like your trombone, saxophone, and flute among others are believed to emulate the flow of air in and out of the airways. While many believe these are merely interpretations of what is occurring inside the body, very subjective at best, you simply cannot discount the fact that music has an effect on the human body.
One of the most observable effects of music is its ability to calm nerves, reduce anxiety, negate fears and worries, and promote a general sense of being well. In some quarters, music has been shown to be particularly effective in the management of milder forms of certain types of pain. Just do not expect that it can cure highly intense acute pain because it cannot. Its effects on pain have been associated to the release of endogenous pain killing substances from the brain. When these substances are released, pain signals reaching the brain are effectively blocked, producing pain-free experience.
Listening to music is an effective way to soothe the mind and relieve mild pain. Playing music, on the other hand, significantly elevates the many benefits of music – more enhanced relaxation, better control of emotions, and more improved sense of self. In a nutshell, playing music, drums in particular, does not only serve the purpose entertainment but it too can be boost an improved health.
